Fun, energetic, athletic, loyal and a man of God are the five words that best describe Jerry Miller. Always ready to share with others the hope that lies within him, he strives to meet people’s needs through the 50+ ministries at Edmond’s First Baptist Church.
Ironically, as a child growing up, Jerry dreamed of becoming a dermatologist. He had terrible allergies and felt he could really help those who had similar problems. Instead, as a senior in high school the Lord called Jerry into the Gospel Ministry while attending Falls Creek. After completing high school at Memorial High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and graduating from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1977 with a Bachelors Degree in Music, Jerry attended Seminary at Southwestern in Fort Worth, Texas, from 1984 to 1987. In 1987, he joined Edmond’s First Baptist Church as Minister of Music.
When asked about his goals, Jerry indicated his main focus is based on Henri Bergson’s immortal words, “To exist is to change, to change is to mature, to mature is to go on creating oneself endlessly.” What greater glory is there than being more today than you were yesterday and more tomorrow than you are today? Through Jesus Christ we have all of life that is offered and we have all the ability to become more like Him in life. Jerry’s greatest desire is for the 50+ Ministries of EFBC to create themselves in His image and to be more like Him as we change and mature. Jerry knows God is still working in his life, and the 50+ ministry will continue to be blessed with new relationships and ministry opportunities. Thankful for new opportunities of service, Jerry is thrilled to see people come to know the Lord, to see them grow and mature, and to be more like Christ. In his current ministry, Jerry knows God is using him to minister to maturing adults and to disciple them into a greater relationship with Christ.
Jerry has been married for 30 years to Jessele Miller, Principal at Centennial Elementary in Edmond. Their daughter, Jessica, is 26 and lives in Edmond with her husband, Joey Marking. Son, Jordan, is 23 and is a gymnastics coach at Oklahoma Gold and a student. His mother-in-law, Helen Ashley, lives in Edmond and is a member of EFBC.
Especially relaxing for Jerry is the time he can spend at home with Jessele and their friends. He also loves to play tennis and to sit and play the piano after a day’s work. His favorite book is Good to Great in God’s Eyes by Chip Ingram, which focuses on ten areas on how we can become greater Christians by serving others and helping to grow His kingdom for His glory.
Jerry’s enthusiastic approach to 50+ ministries is summed up by his favorite Bible verse:
“But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts; and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.”
1 Peter 3:15
