During October 2008, 25 volunteers from Edmond’s First Baptist Church went to Nicaragua in Central America to work with Builders for Children at a boys’ home near El Crucero. They worked through a week when over 60 inches of rain fell on the nation.
In spite of this, they persisted in rewiring the home’s kitchen and laundry, building reinforced beds for the boys, building a staircase for the compound’s guardhouse, sharing in a nearby public school, teaching sewing and crafts to workers and boys, teaching women’s health at a local Baptist church, building lockable medicine storage cabinets for the home and stocking them with medicine, and conducing physical checkups for each boy.
