Book Reviews

Pastor Alan Day's book reviews include the following.  Select a specific link for more information.

Our People Die Well
I recommend the book, even though I don't recommend much of Wesley's theology.   Importantly, I urge our people to live and die in the full assurance of the love of Christ and with a strong confidence of our destiny with Christ.

Common Sense
This is a recommendation for the book, not a review.  I cannot NOT speak out about the present crisis in the United States.   In fact, I consider it my duty to condemn the immorality of a government (both Republican and Democrat led) which confiscates the wealth of its people, devalues the currency, trashes the constitution in the name of providing equal outcomes for all people, and accumulates a massive federal debt that must be paid for by our children and grandchildren.  If you are concerned about where we are headed as a nation, read this book.  Then do something.

If God Were Real
John Avant's new book is both provocative and disturbing.  He writes, "I believe in Jesus.  I love Jesus.  But I'm done with 'Christianity’. . . . My journey away from Christianity has not led me away from Jesus.  In fact, it has led me straight to him.  I really believe that if we live as though God is real, Christianity as we know it will die.  It's terminally ill, and I can't see a cure" (p. 56).

Preach and Heal: A Biblical Model for Missions
A book given to me last week by a representative of the International Missions Board has provided additional insight into the need for churches to become disciple-makers and not just recruiters of new members.  I see this as a rationale for churches to become covenant churches that take commitment to Christ and church membership very seriously.  PREACH AND HEAL: A Biblical Model for Missions, is an analysis of New Testament principles of doing missions.  There is a great deal of stimulating reading in this book, but I want to focus on one of his ideas:  the meaning of New Testament discipleship.

The 5000 Year Leap
W. Cleon Skousen was the founder of the National Center for Constitutional Studies, a university professor and the author of 23 books, including six college texts.  His book, THE 5000 YEAR LEAP, should be required reading for every high school student in America.

Our Founders argued for the necessity of an educated electorate because they knew that “democracy” would become “mobocracy” without an educated people.

Saving Freedom
FINALLY - someone has had the nerve to say what needs to be said about “America’s slide into socialism.”  Senator Jim Demint of South Carolina hit a home run with his new book, SAVING FREEDOM.  Every American should read this book and somebody needs to shout it from the rooftops.

"Why don’t Americans just stand up and demand a return to the principles of freedom?  I’m afraid that’s like asking a drug addict just to quit using drugs.

The Shack
Since several of you have asked my opinion of the novel, THE SHACK, I decided to give a brief review of the book in this article.  There is a continuing stream of favorable reviews, and many are claiming that the book has revolutionized their lives.

The attraction of THE SHACK is its emotional appeal to those who are struggling with the most common of human emotions-grief and sorrow and anger and disappointment. And that's the danger.  It is so emotionally captivating that the theological content can be absorbed unconsciously.
